Can Kratom Enhance A Player’s Performance In Football?

Kratom’s appearance in the American market is quite recent, yet it has become a target in the midst of the War on Drugs. While some sportsmen use it as a performance enhancer and many others use it as a painkiller, much concern has been raised about its effects.

One of the major reasons why kratom capsule review has raised so much dust with drug law enforcement agencies is that it has certain opioid-like effects. Moreover, it somewhat hovers between being an herbal medicine and a prescription drug.

Is kratom a doping agent? Can Kratom enhance a player’s performance in sports like football? Let’s find out the answers below.

The Legal Status Of Kratom

The scientific name of kratom is Mitragyna speciosa. It is also commonly called Ketum, and it’s native to Southeast Asian countries with a rich history of being used as a traditional herbal remedy for pain. Kratom only began to appear in the American market in the 21st century.

Kratom is also well known to have stimulant- and opioid-like effects. These effects make it a bit similar to marijuana, although both plants are from entirely different families. Besides, kratom has no chemical similarity whatsoever with actual opioids.

Kratom has a very turbulent legal status. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has found that kratom has no proven medicinal effects. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also claims to have ample evidence to confirm that there are important safety concerns that come with its use.

Furthermore, several states have banned or restricted the use of kratom. All of these notwithstanding, Kratom is still legal under federal law and requires no prescription.

The Acceptability Of Kratom In Sports

For some years, kratom was on the monitoring program of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA); this meant that athletes in WADA were ‘busted’ for its use. As of this moment, however, it is no longer on the monitoring program.

The Use Of Kratom As A Performance Enhancer In Football

Research has shown that smaller doses of kratom can be stimulatory and may, thus, be good to enhance performance. However, large doses can have sedative-like effects.

Dr. Darshan Singh, a researcher at the Center for Drug Research, University of Science Malaysia, has focused much of his research studies on kratom. He reported that footballers in Malaysia often use kratom tea to enhance their performance.

According to Dr. Singh, this wide usage stems from the fact that manual laborers in some countries in Southeast Asia have, according to historical data, used kratom tea to ease fatigue and boost their focus during long work shifts.

Concerns With Safety

Although USADA claims that kratom is dangerous to the health, one of Singh’s research papers suggests that kratom leaves have no adverse effects on regular users. DEA also claims that between 2014 and 2016, fifteen people died from kratom. However, over 90% of this statistics had other drugs in their system.

Most kratom pills in the market have been adulterated with other chemicals, like O-Desmethyltramadol. So then, concerns with the safety of kratom largely stem from the lack of proper regulation.

Although plants are hard to regulate, it would be beneficial if kratom can be well-regulated. If this is done, buyers will have the assurance that they are buying the real thing.

While kratom may not be totally risk-free, it is generally much safer than opioids. But then, more research is needed to sufficiently prove its therapeutic properties. According to Dr. Singh, kratom may be the cure for opioids if researchers can sufficiently prove that it’s a safer alternative.
